Overheard a guy in line at the DMV complain about his HOA

He said they sent him a $75 fine for a slightly overdue lawn. I was annoyed about my own wait time. Then I realized how that guy must have felt blindsided. Makes me appreciate my landlord who doesn't nickel and dime every little thing. Anyone else get a surprise fee out of nowhere this week?

Oh man, that's rough! I feel bad for that guy, nobody expects to get hit with a surprise fine just for having a slightly messy yard.

Fight it in writing. Send a certified letter to the city asking for proof the fine matches the ordinance. Include photos of your yard showing it's not that bad. Worked for me with a similar ticket last spring. It took two months but they dropped it.

My buddy Mike got slapped with a similar fine last year in Austin. He had this old couch sitting on his porch for like three days while waiting for the bulk pickup truck to come. City inspector drove by, took a picture, and mailed him a 150 dollar ticket. He fought it by sending in photos of the couch with the pickup schedule taped to it and a copy of the confirmation email from the city. Took about six weeks but they finally dropped it and sent an apology letter. Sometimes you just gotta make them prove their case because they count on people paying without question.
