My washing machine died mid-cycle last night and I had to fish out all my wet clothes by hand

I was just trying to get through a normal Wednesday evening, threw in a load of towels and jeans around 8pm. The machine got about 15 minutes into the spin cycle and just started making this horrible grinding noise before it completely shut off. Water was still in the drum, so I had to unplug it, grab a bucket, and scoop out all that cold soapy water by hand. Took me almost 45 minutes to get everything drained and the clothes wrung out in the bathtub. Now I'm stuck with a giant wet pile of laundry and no idea if it's worth fixing a 7 year old machine or if I should just bite the bullet and buy a new one. Has anyone dealt with a similar sudden death situation with their appliances, and did you go for repair or replacement?

Yeah I feel for you, that's a rough way to spend an evening. Had my fridge just give up on a Saturday morning once, food everywhere, and I had to make the same call on repair or replace. For a 7 year old washer I'd probably lean toward a new one, parts and labor can get pricey fast and newer machines are way more efficient.

Fixed my dryer with a youtube video and a $12 part once... felt like a genius for a whole week. Washer gave up on me two years ago, seven years old just like yours, and I went back and forth forever. Called a repair guy who quoted me almost half the cost of a new machine just for the motor. Ended up buying a new one with a longer warranty and it's paid for itself in water savings alone. Sometimes that old machine just isn't worth the headache of chasing down parts.
