My garage door opener gave up on me right before a big rainstorm last Thursday

It was the Chamberlain model I've had for about 8 years, and the motor just started making this awful grinding noise and stopped. I had to manually lift the door, which is heavy, and then prop it with a piece of wood from my workbench. Has anyone had to replace just the motor unit, or is it smarter to get a whole new system?

Ever feel like your garage door opener times its breakdowns for maximum drama? Mine did the same thing, but during a heatwave (so I guess we're both lucky). I just replaced the whole unit, honestly, it felt easier than trying to fix the old one.

Garage doors have a real talent for picking the worst possible moment. Mine gave up right as I was unloading a cart full of groceries in a downpour. Sometimes a full replacement is just the universe telling you to stop fighting it.

Ugh, my garage door opener and I have the same work ethic.
