My 12 year old washing machine finally quit mid-cycle yesterday

It was a Tuesday around 3pm when the drum just stopped spinning mid-cycle with a load of wet towels. I popped open the lid and saw water still sitting there, no draining at all. Called my dad who said it might be the pump but he remembered the machine came with a 10 year warranty that expired in 2014. I ended up spending 20 minutes on the phone with a repair guy who quoted me $180 just to come look at it. For a machine that old, that's half the cost of a new basic one. So now I'm stuck deciding if I should fix it or just bite the bullet and buy a replacement. Has anyone else dealt with a major appliance dying at the worst possible time?

Heard a tip from a friend that some repair guys will give you a discount on a new machine if they come out and see how old yours is. Might be worth asking around before you pull the trigger on anything.

Not sure a repair guy would knock money off a new machine though, more of a salesman thing.
