PSA: I turned off my router's guest network for a month thinking it was safer.
My smart doorbell stopped updating reliably, and my ISP's tech support in Austin said isolating all IoT devices on the main network actually made them easier to scan, so now I'm looking for a better way to segment my home network.

Heard putting IoT stuff on a separate VLAN helps a lot.

Actually, a VLAN alone doesn't fully secure things. It just separates the traffic on your own network. You still need firewall rules to block those IoT devices from talking to your main stuff.

Wait, you heard what the ISP guy said about scanning? My buddy had his smart plugs go nuts last year. He did the same thing, shoved everything onto his main wifi thinking it was locked down. Turns out his cheap security cameras were basically shouting hello to every device in the house. He set up a separate VLAN just for that stuff and the weird traffic stopped overnight. It was a pain to set up but he says his network feels way less exposed now.
