PSA: A fake 'your package is held' text cost me 3 hours and a trip to the bank
Last Wednesday I got a text saying my package was stuck at a facility in Reno and I needed to pay $2.99 to release it, so like an idiot I clicked the link and typed in my card number. Two hours later my bank flagged four charges from a store I've never heard of, and I spent the rest of the day at the branch in the cold canceling the card and filling out fraud forms. Why do these fake delivery texts still work so well on people, and what's your rule for spotting them before you tap the link?
I heard on a podcast that these scams blow up every year around the holidays because so many people actually are waiting on packages, so the text feels real. My rule is simple, no legit carrier ever asks you to pay a redelivery fee by text, and I never tap links from numbers I don't know. Sorry that happened to you, sitting at the bank in the cold filling out forms is the worst.
