My hotel wifi in Vegas got me locked out of my own email

I was at a conference in Las Vegas last month and logged into the hotel's free wifi to check my work email. The next morning, I got a security alert that someone in another country tried to access my account. The hotel's network was wide open, no real security at all. Now I never use public wifi without my VPN turned on first. What's your go-to VPN for travel?

Ever try a VPN on your phone too, @elliot_gibson27?

No security at all on a hotel network... that's just asking for trouble.

Hotel wifi with no security at all? That's basically an open invitation for trouble. I've been using ProtonVPN for a while now, it's pretty solid and doesn't slow things down too much. Their free tier is decent for basic stuff, but I pay for the full version when traveling for work.

My cousin got his bank info stolen at a coffee shop last year.
