My bank app pinged me at 2:47am in Boise and I almost tapped the fake link before my brain woke up
Last week I got a text at 2:47am saying my debit card was locked and I needed to verify my info in the next 15 minutes or the account would freeze. I was half asleep in my apartment in Boise and my thumb was literally over the link when something felt off. Real banks don't text you a link at 3am with a ticking clock, and mine has never once asked me to log in through a text. I closed it, opened my actual bank app, and everything was fine, no lock, no alert, nothing. The next morning I called the number on the back of my card and the rep said they had gotten 30 or so calls that same week from people in the area about the same text. She also told me the link went to a page that looked almost exactly like the real login screen, which is the scary part. Now I check anything that pings me overnight by going straight to the app instead of tapping. Anyone else seeing this wave of fake bank texts lately, and did you almost fall for it too?
Getting woken up at that hour messes with your head so bad, and the fake link looking like the real login screen is what gets people. My sister got one of those texts last month around 5am saying her account was frozen and she actually typed in her password before she caught herself and hung up. She spent the whole next day changing everything and calling her bank twice just to breathe again. What saved you was that weird feeling, that little voice saying banks don't do business at 3am with a countdown clock. Scary how close it was, and good on you for going straight to the app instead of tapping.
