Got hit with a ransomware demand at my shop last Tuesday
Someone clicked a link in a fake "invoice overdue" email and locked up our customer database. I had to shut down the whole computer system for two days while I wiped drives and restored from a backup I keep on a disconnected hard drive. Lost about $3,000 in business because we couldn't look up parts or appointments. Anyone else keep an offline backup, or am I just paranoid?

Honestly, that's not being paranoid, that's just smart business.

Oh man that's a really good point. I used to think people were just being over the top about testing backups but seeing it laid out like that... yeah it changes my whole view on it.

Did you test restoring from that backup before this happened? A lot of people have backups but never actually try to boot from them. Then when they need it, the drive fails or the data is corrupted. I know a shop that had a backup drive for years, then the ransomware hit and the backup had errors in the database. They still lost everything.
