My secured card limit bump after 8 months in Wichita

I put down $300 on a secured card back in January, just to build something from zero. After 8 months of paying the full balance every Friday, they bumped me to $800 without me asking. That jump made my utilization go from like 60% down to 25% overnight. Has anyone else had a lender do this automatically, or do you usually have to request it?

Your math is a little off. If your limit went from $300 to $800, that's a $500 raise, so your utilization would only drop by about 60% of the old amount if you're spending the same. Going from 60% to 25% means your balance actually went down too, not just the limit. A $300 limit at 60% is $180, and $180 on an $800 limit is 22.5%, so yeah, it's mostly the limit bump doing the work, but you also must have been carrying less than you were before. Either way, a free bump without asking is a good sign, most lenders want you to request it after a year.
