My neighbor said credit scores are fake and I nearly lost it

I was grabbing my mail yesterday when my neighbor Dave starts telling me he doesn't pay any bills on time because 'credit scores are a scam made up by the banks.' I asked him how he plans to buy a house someday and he just shrugged. He's 35 and still renting with no savings. I think too many people use that excuse to avoid being responsible with money. Has anyone else had to explain to a grown adult how credit actually works?
