My instructor told me to stop using so much product on fine hair
She said I was overdoing it with the mousse and a pea-sized amount of spray gel would work better for a fine-haired client last week. Tried it on a thin-haired woman in Denver and her curls actually held for the first time all day. Anyone else get told they're too heavy-handed with product?

My friend wrecked her fine hair with too much product once.

@blair_taylor32 Its a common mistake people make with fine hair. They figure more product means more hold or volume, but it just weighs everything down and makes it look greasy. Fine hair needs way less product than youd think, like a pea-sized amount of mousse instead of a handful. I see it happen with styling creams and heavy oils all the time. People need to start small and add more if they really need it.

Heard one stylist say something that changed how I look at it. She said fine hair is like a delicate plant - you don't dump a whole watering can on a tiny sprout, you give it just enough to thrive. Too much product doesn't just weigh hair down, it actually stops the natural texture from doing its thing. Think about how fine hair can look stringy and sad when it's overloaded, but bouncy and alive with just the right amount. That's because the product is fighting against the hair's own movement instead of working with it. So it's not just about hold or volume, it's about letting the hair be itself.
