Looking back at my old color mixing from 2010

Back then, I would just eyeball the developer and toner amounts for a root touch up. I mixed a 20 volume with a level 7 ash in a plastic bowl, guessing the ratio. After a client in Charlotte had brassy roots three times, I switched to using a precise scale for every formula. Now I measure grams for each part, and the color comes out even every single time. Has anyone else moved from guessing to measuring for color work?

Yeah, that's the move. Guessing ratios with developer is a fast track to inconsistent results.

My buddy had the same thing happen, a total color meltdown from eyeballing toner. He bought a scale the next day.

Totally get that. Eyeballing developer is a recipe for hot roots, especially with ash tones. A cheap gram scale from the kitchen section changed everything. Now a level 7 ash with 20 volume is always 1 to 1.5, every single time. No more guessing games or having to fix it later.
