A client's comment about her mom's old perm made me think about how the job has changed

I was doing a color correction last Thursday, and my client, a woman in her 60s, started talking about her mom getting a perm in the 80s. She said, 'Back then, it smelled like a chemical plant and took all day. Now you just sit here and chat for an hour.' It hit me how much the tools and products have shifted. We used to have these heavy, hot perm rods and solutions that could really dry out hair. Now the formulas are gentler, the tools are lighter, and the whole process is faster. It's not just about a new style, it's about a better experience from start to finish. I wonder if other stylists have noticed clients bringing up these old school versus new school comparisons, and what they say.

Honestly I used to think perms were just outdated, but hearing how much better they are now (gentler, faster) makes me see it's a real upgrade. That old process sounded rough.

My aunt still has that 80s perm smell stuck in her nose.

My mom's hair always smelled like that perm solution for years after... it was a mix of chemicals and Aqua Net. That scent really does stick with you forever.
