My clearest memory is the sound of my mother's typewriter when I was three.

I was sitting on the floor in our apartment in Dayton, and she was typing a letter. The steady clack-clack-clack is what I remember most, not what she looked like. It makes me think now about how we hold onto sounds and feelings more than pictures. Does anyone else have a memory that's more about a sound than a sight?

My dad used to have this old truck with a very specific rattle from the tailgate. I can't picture the road, but I can still hear that exact metallic sound whenever we hit a bump on the way to the lake. It's funny what sticks.

Actually, smells are way stronger for me. That truck would have had its own smell I bet.
