Showerthought: a 61 year old electrician asked me why I trust my phone more than my own ears
I was on a small tenant buildout in Boise two months ago, pulling wire with a guy named Duane who has been doing electrical work since before I was born. He noticed me checking my phone every ten minutes for the panel schedule and load calcs instead of just reading the space, and he asked me flat out why I trust a screen more than my own ears. The building had a weird hum coming from a subpanel near the back room that my app said was running perfectly fine. Duane put his hand on the wall and said that hum was a loose neutral and no software was going to feel that for me. He was right, we found a backed out lug on the neutral bar that the app never flagged. We got the app because it should save us time, but now I keep a cheap clamp meter in my pouch and I actually stop and listen more. Curious if anyone else has had a tool make them worse at the basics before it made them better.
