The moon landing footage loss story keeps changing every time I look it up
I was reading about the Apollo 11 tapes a few weeks ago and saw a claim that NASA accidentally recorded over them. Then I found a NASA engineer from 2009 who said the tapes were stored in a different facility and just misplaced. Now I'm seeing that some tapes were found in 2015 in a barn in Pennsylvania but they were degraded. So which version is actually true here? It feels like the story shifts every 5 years and nobody can agree on the basics. Has anyone else tracked this through original NASA documents instead of just repeating what a YouTube video said?

Does it really matter that much though?

Started out thinking it was just conspiracy clickbait honestly, but then I sat down and actually read the 2009 NASA OIG report on the missing slow-scan tapes. Here's what got me - that report clearly states the tapes were sent to storage at the Goddard facility, then later destroyed or misplaced during a cleanup, not recorded over like a lot of people claim. The barn tapes people talk about from 2015 are actually kinescope copies made for TV broadcast, not the original high-data-rate tapes from the moon. So there's multiple things happening at once - the original master tapes are likely gone for good, but lower quality copies keep turning up in weird places. Does the constant shifting of details make you trust any version of this story less?

The 2009 OIG report you mentioned, that part about the tapes being sent to storage and then destroyed during cleanup, that's the most solid thing I've seen on this whole mess. But honestly, does it really matter that much in the grand scheme? I mean, we've been looking at those same Apollo 11 images for fifty years now. The quality is what it is. People get so worked up over these technical details like it changes something fundamental about the moon landing, but it doesn't. It's just a bunch of missing magnetic tape, not some hidden secret. I don't trust any version more or less, I just think this whole thing is a gigantic waste of energy for something that doesn't affect anyone's daily life.
