I quit using canned air for dusty builds, switched to a $15 paintbrush trick

For like 8 years I kept buying those big dusty cans of compressed air, the expensive ones you get at office supply stores. Then last month I was cleaning out a desktop that had a thick layer of cat hair and cigarette film on the fans. I tried the canned air and it just blew the dust deeper into the heatsink. I was about to order another can when my buddy who does vintage console repairs told me to grab a cheap 2 inch natural bristle paintbrush, like the kind for oil painting, and just sweep the fans and fins gently while holding a vacuum nearby. I thought he was messing with me, but I tried it on that dirty rig and it took maybe 10 minutes versus the 40 I usually spend fighting with spray cans. Now I keep one brush in my tool bag, one at my bench, and I only use canned air for blowing out power supplies or tight spots. Has anyone else switched to brushes or do you still swear by the cans? I'm curious if there's a better method for sticky dust, like the kind that clings after years of smoking.

My buddy calls it the "old man trick" cause every older tech I know has some weird simple tool they swear by, like using a toothbrush for keyboard crumbs or a sewing pin to unclog spray cans. It's funny how the fancy solution always ends up being the worst one.

Have you tried hitting the sticky stuff with a little isopropyl alcohol on the brush first? I started doing that for the gunk that just won't budge, and it breaks it down way faster than dry sweeping. I also found that a wider, flatter brush works better for the big fan blades, the small round ones just push the dust around. For the really bad spots, I'll dip the brush in the alcohol, sweep, then hit it with the vacuum while it's still wet so the junk doesn't re-stick. It's a bit more setup, but beats buying a third can of air that just freezes your fingers anyway.
