PSA: Found out the original 'Watchmen' pitch was for the Charlton Comics characters DC later bought
I read it in a 2005 interview with Dave Gibbons, and it makes you see the whole story differently, like how Rorschach was supposed to be The Question.

Yeah, that explains why I always felt like a cheap knock-off when I tried to make my own superhero as a kid... my guy was just The Question but with a paper bag over his head. The whole thing makes you appreciate how they remixed those old parts into something new.

Wow, that background really changes how you see it. It wasn't just making new heroes from scratch. They took these existing blueprints and broke them apart on purpose. That remix is the whole point. It shows how you can take a simple idea and twist it into something darker and more real. The genius is in the twist, not just the pieces they started with.
