Finally fixed that squeaky floorboard in the hallway after 2 years

I moved into my house in Raleigh back in 2022 and that one board near the bathroom door has been driving me crazy every time I stepped on it. Last week I grabbed a box of screws and some wood glue from the garage and spent an hour shimming it from underneath in the crawlspace. Has anyone else dealt with a stubborn squeak that took way too long to get around to fixing?

Spent 6 hours chasing a network drop until I tried the dumbest thing

Been fighting a weird intermittent drop on a client's network over in Oakville for about a week. Did all the usual stuff. Swapped cables, checked the switch ports, ran ping tests for hours. Turned out the patch cable from the wall plate to their VOIP phone was loosely crimped on one end. Like the little plastic tab was broken off and it just barely made contact unless the phone sat at exactly the right angle. I felt like a total idiot. Has anyone else had a fix that simple after way too much troubleshooting?

Hit a pothole outside Nashville that cracked my oil pan - now I always check my skid plate bolts

Was rolling through construction on I-40 near the 219 exit around 2am, didn't see that monster pothole till it was too late. Cracked the pan on my '18 T680, lost about 3 quarts before I caught it. Took me 4 hours on the shoulder to patch it up with some JB Weld and get to a shop. Ever since then I spend an extra 5 minutes every oil change making sure all those skid plate bolts are torqued right. Any of you guys run into a pothole that did some real damage?

The day I realized my 'helpful' advice was just mansplaining code reviews

About 2 months back I was reviewing a junior dev's pull request on our team's React app. I started typing out this long comment about how they should restructure their component. Then I paused and actually looked at what they built. It worked fine. It was clean. I was just mad they didn't do it MY way. What tipped me off was when another senior dev replied with just "looks good" and approved it. Made me wonder how many times I've been that guy. Has anyone else caught themselves critiquing just to feel useful?

Shoutout to the old timer who showed me why my paver patio kept sinking

I redid my whole backyard patio two years ago and it looked great for about six months. Then the pavers started shifting and a low spot showed up right by the grill. I figured I just needed better gravel underneath. Then my neighbor Bill, who's like 70 and has lived here since the 80s, watched me digging it up and asked if I used geotextile fabric. I told him no, I thought that was just for driveways. He laughed and said that's why sand keeps washing out from under my pavers every time it rains hard. I pulled up the shifted section last weekend and sure enough, all the base material had mixed with the dirt below. Bill said he learned that trick building paths in the 90s before it was common practice. Has anyone else had a patio fail because they skipped the fabric layer under the base?

Coworking in Bali vs paying for a bungalow with good wifi - which actually saves money?

I just ran the numbers on my last month in Ubud and found out I spent $320 on coworking passes but only used the space 12 times. Meanwhile my homestay had a desk and fiber internet for $450 total. Found this stat on some nomad budget blog - apparently 60% of people who buy coworking memberships in SE Asia end up working from their accommodation half the time anyway. Does anyone else feel pressured to get a coworking pass even when your place has solid internet?

Question about stubborn milia under a client's eye

A regular client came in with a tiny, hard milia spot right in the delicate area under her eye. I figured I'd just extract it during her facial, no big deal. That single spot took me over 25 minutes of careful work with a sterile lancet and comedone extractor, trying not to damage the thin skin. It was lodged way deeper than it looked. Has anyone else had a simple extraction turn into a major time sink like that?

I was sure my sauerkraut needed a full month to ferment

I started a batch of red cabbage kraut back in early March, following my usual process. After only 18 days, I checked it and the taste was already perfect, sharp and tangy. I always thought it needed that full 30 days to develop properly, no exceptions. The warmer temperature in my kitchen this spring must have sped things up a lot. Now I'm checking every few days after the two-week mark. Has anyone else had a batch finish way faster than expected because of the room temp?

Just found out my credit score dropped 40 points from one missed payment

I was checking my score on Credit Karma yesterday and saw it went from 720 down to 680. It was a single $35 payment on a store card I forgot about from three months back. I had no idea one small slip could hit that hard. Has anyone else had a score drop this much from one mistake?
