Heard a guy at the con say collecting is about the money now, not the stories

I was at the Emerald City Comic Con last weekend and overheard two collectors arguing. One said, 'I only buy keys for the ROI, the stories are just a bonus.' The other guy got mad and said that mindset is ruining the hobby for real fans. It made me think, is collecting now more about investment portfolios than personal passion? I see slabs going for thousands online, and it feels different from when I traded books with friends. Has the focus on value and grading completely changed what it means to be a fan?

That's just sad to hear.

Right? @violar35 nailed it, feels like everything's just for flipping now. I bought a book last week and the seller had it listed as "unread" like that's a flex.

That whole vibe just sucks the fun right out of it. Totally agree with @violar35, it is sad. Feels like a stock market now instead of a hobby. I miss when people actually read the books they bought.
