A barista in Denver told me my favorite beans were about to go stale

I was at a small shop on Colfax Avenue about two months ago, buying my usual bag of their Ethiopian blend. The barista, a guy named Leo, stopped me and said, 'Hold up, that batch was roasted six weeks ago. It's past its peak.' He pulled a different bag from the back, roasted just four days prior. The taste difference was huge, like going from flat soda to fresh. I'd been drinking dull coffee for weeks without knowing. Now I always check the roast date before I buy. How do you guys make sure you're getting fresh beans?

Honestly, I've started asking for the freshest bag they have in the back, not just what's on the shelf.

Yeah, always ask for the back stock.
