PSA: I blamed my tools for rough cuts until this one job

I always thought if the finish was off, it had to be a dull or cheap end mill, you know? But on a recent run of stainless steel parts, even fresh tools gave me chatter. I mean, I was ready to order new cutters, but then I checked the workholding. The part had a tiny bit of play in the vise jaws. Adding some rubber pads and cranking it down just right solved everything. Maybe it's just me, but now I look at the fixture first before anything else.

You solved chatter just with rubber pads? I'm shocked it wasn't the end mill.

The rule means check setup first, tools can still be bad.

My old boss drilled that rule into me.

Yeah I read that same old machinist rule somewhere, something like 'the tool is the last thing to blame.' It's so easy to get focused on feed rates and cutter geometry when the real problem is just the part moving a tiny bit. You spend all this money on fancy coated end mills but skip checking the basic clamp pressure, you know? Makes you wonder how many times we've all done that exact same thing.
