I've been setting my tool offsets wrong for months because of a bad habit from my old shop

Honestly, I was chasing a tolerance issue on a batch of 304 stainless parts for a local machine shop. My finish passes were just off by a few thou, and I kept tweaking the wear offset. My lead guy, Mike, watched me do it three times and finally said, 'You're still touching off with the paper pull method, aren't you?' Tbh, I'd been doing it that way since my last job, but on this newer machine, the spindle orientation meant I was always putting a slight side load on the tool. I switched to using the presetter data and inputting it directly, and the next part was spot on. Has anyone else had to unlearn a 'standard' practice from a previous shop that just didn't translate?

Old habits die hard, especially with tool offsets.

So you're still using the paper trick to set tools?
