I thought my apartment was too small for a compost bin until I tried a trick with my freezer

My building in Phoenix doesn't have compost pickup, and I felt bad throwing food scraps in the trash. I saw a tip online about keeping a small bag in the freezer for scraps like coffee grounds and vegetable peels. I tried it for a month, and it stopped the smell and fruit flies I got from a countertop bin. Now I drop the frozen bag at a community garden bin every few weeks. Has anyone found other good ways to compost without a yard?

I always thought that was weird but it actually works great.

@ellioth37 exactly, the real trick is drying them first before freezing.

You ever mess up the drying part so bad that your frozen herbs turn into one solid green ice cube? Because I sure have. Thought I was being clever, threw a bunch of wet basil straight in the bag, and a week later I had a basil popsicle I couldn't even break apart. Now I'm extra paranoid with the drying step. I even set a timer so I don't forget and leave them out for three days like a slob. It's a whole system now, but at least I'm not eating frozen herb bricks anymore.

@ellioth37 do you keep the bag in a special container or just loose in the freezer?
