The stat about walk-in cooler energy costs blew my mind
I was reading through some restaurant energy audit stuff online and saw that a single walk-in cooler can cost over $1,000 a year to run just in electricity. That's more than I spend on fuel for my whole landscaping truck in a busy season. Has anyone here actually tracked their cooler's power bill separate from the rest of the kitchen?

Over $1,000 a year to run just in electricity" - that's just wild to me. I had no idea a cooler could eat that much power. My home fridge does the same thing all day and I'm sure it's nowhere near that number. They must have those compressors running nonstop or something. I always figured a walk-in was pretty efficient since it's so well insulated. Guess I was dead wrong. That kind of cost would make me think twice about keeping extra stuff cold.

Yeah did they say if the insulation is actually any good or maybe the door seal is shot? My uncle had a similar setup at his garage and @diana617 would not believe how much he spent patching leaks before the power bill finally dropped.

Totally agree, and @joel_jones, your uncle's story is giving me flashbacks. I had a similar walk-in at my old place and thought it was fine until I actually checked the door seal. It was completely shot, like a gap you could fit a finger through. The compressor was running nonstop, just like diana617 said. I patched it up with new weather stripping and some insulation tape, and my electric bill dropped by like 40 bucks a month. It's all those tiny leaks that kill you.
