Shoutout to the career counselor who told me to stop chasing job titles
Back in 2018 I was dead set on becoming a "digital marketing manager" because it sounded important. She sat me down and asked what I actually liked doing day to day, and I said writing emails. Now I'm a senior email copywriter at a retail chain in Chicago and honestly I make more than most of the managers I used to envy. Has anyone else found more success by ignoring the title and focusing on the actual work?

Manager titles are just fancy ways to say you do everyone's work.

YES! My friend was assistant manager but actually running the company. Fired the boss eventually.

My buddy Dave was an "assistant store manager" at this big retail chain, but really he was the one doing all the scheduling, ordering, and handling the angry customers. The actual store manager just sat in the office watching YouTube all day. Dave finally got sick of it after the manager took credit for his holiday display idea that saved the company like $10,000. So he started keeping a log of everything the manager did wrong, which was a lot. He took that log to the district manager and the boss got fired within two weeks. Now Dave is the store manager and actually runs the place, which is way better.
