My old boss told me to never ask for a raise in the first year
Honestly, I waited 14 months and got a 5% bump, but my coworker asked at 9 months and got 8% plus a title change. Has anyone else been given this advice and found it was wrong?

Seriously, it's just advice. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. Not every boss is trying to scam you.

That advice is so outdated it hurts. Waiting a full year can actually cost you money, like in your case. The best time to ask is after you've clearly added value, maybe by finishing a big project or taking on extra work. If you have the results to show for it, 6 or 9 months is totally fair. Bosses who say to wait a year are often just hoping you won't ask.

Man, that's rough. My buddy had the same thing happen. His manager told him to wait a full year, so he did. Meanwhile, a new guy on his team asked at 8 months with a list of what he'd done and got a 10% raise. My friend was pretty mad. That old rule just lets companies save money. If you can prove your worth early, you should ask.
