Update: That cheap tarp I bought at Walmart last spring
After a full season of rain and sun it's basically disintegrating, while my buddy's $40 one from REI still looks new. Anyone else find out the hard way that saving $15 just means buying twice?

Read somewhere that UV rays just destroy cheap poly tarps way faster than people realize. The REI stuff probably has some kind of coating that actually blocks it. Lesson learned the HARD way with a tarp over my patio furniture last year - turned into confetti after two months.

Goodness gracious, I learned that exact same lesson with a blue tarp from the local hardware store. It was supposed to be "heavy duty" but by the end of summer the grommets just ripped right out and the whole thing turned brittle and cracked. My neighbor has had the same thick canvas tarp for almost ten years now covering his firewood pile. Makes you wonder why we keep trying to save a few dollars on things that sit outside in the weather.
