Serious question, why do people say to never check a bag?

Everyone told me to only take a carry-on for my trip to Lisbon, but I found a cheap airline that charged $60 for a checked bag each way. I packed a small suitcase with food from home, like peanut butter and granola bars, and saved over $100 on meals. The bag fee was $120 total, but I spent way less on eating out. Has anyone else tried this with a budget airline?

My trip to Barcelona last year, I packed a whole extra bag just with snacks and it saved me a ton. I get why @karen_sanchez49 says that rule exists, but sometimes checking a bag is the smart move. You just have to do the math for your own trip.

Ha, I'm the reason for that rule!

That "I'm the reason for that rule" feeling is everywhere. You see it when a store puts up a new "no more than two samples" sign because someone took advantage. It's like our collective small choices end up creating the official policies everyone has to follow.
