Serious question, is anyone else seeing these crazy tourist taxes in Europe now?

Just got back from a week in Barcelona and I'm still annoyed about the city tourist tax. It was 3.50 euros per person, per night, on top of the hotel bill. I booked a cheap place for 45 euros a night thinking I had a great deal, but that extra fee added almost 25 euros to my total stay. The hostel didn't even mention it clearly on the booking site, just a tiny note in the fine print. It feels like a hidden cost that just kills your budget when you're trying to travel light on cash. I get that cities need money, but hitting tourists with extra fees after they've already paid for a room just seems unfair. Has anyone found a way to avoid these, or know which cities are adding them now?

That Barcelona tax is rough. I heard Amsterdam's is even worse at 12.5% of the room rate per night. Did you notice if the tax money was actually going towards anything you saw, like cleaning up areas or better public transport for tourists? Or did it just feel like a pure cash grab?

Ever wonder if that tax is the reason the streets in the tourist zones are actually pretty clean? I mean, I saw city workers power washing the sidewalks in the Gothic Quarter almost every morning. It didn't feel like a grab to me because the public transit was so good and clearly used by everyone. Maybe it's just me, but when a place is that well kept, I don't mind paying a bit extra to help keep it that way.

In Venice, they added a small fee to enter the main areas during peak season. It was annoying at first, but then you saw the money going into canal cleanup and crowd control. It made the visit way better than other packed cities without a similar system. You could actually tell the difference.
