My derailleur hanger trick that cost me $3 instead of a new frame

Honestly I did something similar with my old aluminum road bike. I snapped the derailleur hanger clean off during a group ride and was ready to toss the whole frameset. Ended up taking it to a local machine shop and had them weld a new hanger tab on for 15 bucks. The guy looked at me like I was crazy but it held up for another two seasons. Tbh it wasn't pretty but it worked fine and saved me from buying a whole new bike. Ngl I think that kind of hacky fix is half the fun of working on your own bikes.

The trick that finally made Python classes click for me was drawing boxes on paper

lol I actually read about a teacher who made her students act out variable scope with a backpack full of sticky notes in class. She had them pass the backpack around and grab notes out depending on what function they were pretending to run. @lindag33 your whiteboard crime scene comment killed me because I do the exact same thing with like six colors of marker trying to trace callback chains. It's crazy how much easier this stuff clicks when you make it physical instead of just staring at a screen.

Found a simple fix for stuck shutter blades on old Copal shutters

Light fluid never did it for me either, but a single drop of oil on the pivot points fixed a frozen Compur shutter on an old folder I had. Best tip I ever got from a crusty old camera repair guy.

Met a guy at a bus stop who gave me the best job advice I ever got

Guess it turns out the secret to getting ahead isn't some fancy hustle, just not being late like everyone else. Maybe the real life hack is just catching a bus in the rain and hoping the universe sends you a mechanic with good timing. I mean, sounds like you got your money's worth out of that bus fare.

Spent 6 hours chasing a network drop until I tried the dumbest thing

Jumped on a similar one last month. Client said their printer kept dropping off the network every time someone walked past the desk. I spent two hours checking signal interference, redoing cable runs, even swapped the switch port. Turned out the ethernet cable was looped around the leg of the desk and someone's foot would nudge it just enough to disconnect. Plugged it in properly and cable tied it out of the way. Fixed. Felt like a proper plonker after all that.
