Overheard a guy at the hostel say he books flights 330 days out and saves 40%

I always thought last minute deals were the way to go but after hearing him break down how he snagged a round trip to Tokyo for $450 I'm wondering if I've been doing this wrong for the last 3 years, anyone else tried booking that far ahead?

Yeah but airlines don't even have schedules up that far out...

Yeah but airlines don't even have schedules up that far out..." My buddy tried to book a flight to Iceland 11 months ahead and the airline just said "check back later" every time he called... ended up scoring a deal 6 months out instead, but he was so stressed about it.
