Found a trick for finding cheap hotels near airports

I used to book whatever hotel was closest to the airport and always paid $150 a night or more. Then I started checking hotels along the flight path in smaller towns about 20 minutes away. Last trip to Denver I booked a place in Aurora for $72 a night and it was cleaner than any airport hotel I've stayed at. Has anyone else had luck with this or found other spots near airports that are way cheaper?

How far outside the city do you usually go? I've stayed in Aurora before too and the price difference was crazy compared to downtown Denver hotels. Did you find that area felt safe enough walking around at night or did you pretty much just drive straight to the hotel and lock the door?

Honestly I used to think the same way but staying out there actually changed my mind about how safe it felt.

yeah but was it actually unsafe or did you just feel uncomfortable? people act like stepping foot outside downtown is dangerous but half the time it's just different lighting and less crowded sidewalks.
