My sister called my cheap chili 'bean soup' and it stung
She came over last month, took one look at my pot, and said 'Mark, this is just bean soup with a sprinkle of chili powder.' I was using a single can of tomato paste and a ton of water to stretch it. I changed it up. Now I use two cans of crushed tomatoes and a whole extra packet of seasoning, costs about $1.50 more total. The flavor is way deeper and it actually tastes like chili now. Anyone else get called out on a 'budget' meal that was just too cheap?

Honestly, your sister had a point. That original recipe sounds like it was just flavored water. Sometimes you need to spend that extra dollar to actually make the food you're trying to make.

I get what you mean about spending a bit more, but calling it flavored water is a stretch. A lot of old recipes were built on simple, cheap basics because that's all people had. It might seem plain now, but it worked for them back then. You ever try an old family recipe that sounds too simple but actually turns out good?

My grandma's depression era cake uses just flour, sugar, and a can of tomato soup.
