Rant: I spent 47 years cutting bell peppers the wrong way and only realized it when my aunt laughed at me at Thanksgiving dinner.

I'd been hacking off the top and bottom, losing half the flesh, and she showed me how to just slice off the four sides in 12 seconds flat, has anyone else had a tiny kitchen epiphany like that that made you feel like a total idiot?

That thing about losing half the flesh hit me hard because I realized I've been wasting food for decades without even knowing it. My epiphany came with peeling ginger, not peppers. I used to scrape at it with a spoon trying to get the skin off, but then my roommate just grabbed the edge with his fingernail and peeled the whole thing in one strip. Felt like a total fool standing there with my scratched up ginger root. Sometimes the simplest little tricks completely change how you do stuff in the kitchen and you wonder why nobody told you sooner.

@tyler854 did that trick work on older, tougher ginger or just the young stuff?
