Finally admitted my home network setup was a mess after 8 hours of troubleshooting

I spent last Saturday trying to fix my parents' Wi-Fi that kept dropping every 20 minutes. Thought it was the router, then the modem, then the cables. Turns out I had their old 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands merged and their smart thermostat was fighting with the microwave for bandwidth. Took me 8 hours to figure out what a network friend told me in 5 minutes: just split the bands and rename them. Has anyone else had a simple fix hide behind hours of overthinking?

72 hours man. 72 hours I spent last summer thinking my whole apartment building had some weird electrical issue because my lights would flicker every time I gamed. Bought a whole new power strip, a voltage regulator, even called an electrician who charged me 200 bucks to tell me the wiring was fine. Turns out my roommate had plugged a cheap space heater into the same circuit as my computer and it was tripping the breaker in the most subtle way. The electrician literally just pointed at the heater and said "unplug that when you game" and it fixed everything. I felt like such a clown for not just looking at what else was on the same outlet first. So yeah, totally get the 8 hours for a 5 minute fix thing. It's like our brains just skip the obvious step and go straight to the expensive complicated stuff.

72 hours is wild though... you spent more time troubleshooting than your roommate spent actually using that heater. At least the electrician probably made your apartment feel haunted for a solid day with that reveal.

Ha! Sounds like my "fix the router" hour long ritual of just unplugging it.
