A friend pointed out my overwatering killed a whole tray of heirloom tomato seedlings

I was trying to grow some 'Brandywine' tomatoes from seed in my basement setup, and a buddy who works at the local nursery in Springfield saw my sad, yellow plants. He told me flat out, 'You're drowning them, they need air at the roots more than water.' I switched to only watering when the soil felt dry an inch down, and the next batch is way healthier. Anyone else have a simple tip that saved a plant project?

Wait, is it always just overwatering though? My basement setup gets super dry air from the furnace, so my seedlings dry out fast. I actually killed a batch by underwatering because I was so scared of overdoing it. Maybe the real tip is to check your own room's conditions first?

Totally feel you on the dry air thing. My last place had a heater that sucked all the moisture out. I started sticking my finger in the soil every single day, like actually down to the first knuckle. If it felt dry that deep, I'd give them a light drink from the bottom. A cheap humidity tray with some pebbles and water under the pots helped a ton too.

So, @jessica130, do you still check every single day?
