That book on debate tactics I thought was garbage actually fixed my club's arguments
Our book club spent three months arguing over whether to read fiction or nonfiction. I ignored everyone pushing The Art of Debate by David Zarefsky because it sounded like a boring textbook. Last week I finally skimmed the first chapter after someone left it at my house. The section on framing questions stopped our last fight about book selection in 5 minutes. Has anyone else had a recommended book they resisted but then it actually solved a group problem?

Honestly @mark436's point about shifting the energy is spot on. We were locked in a dead heat over fiction vs nonfiction titles until I basically said "I hear why you'd want nonfiction, but what if we framed it as 'which story do we want to live inside for a month?'" and suddenly everyone was nodding instead of shouting. My buddy kept insisting I'd hate that book and I'm still not telling him he was right.

That framing questions trick actually stopped a fight? How exactly did you use it?

You frame it like you're already on their side, not trying to win an argument. Like instead of saying "you're wrong about that" I'll say "I get why you'd think that, the thing I keep noticing is..." It shifts the whole energy from defensive to curious, and people usually open up instead of digging in.
