Rant: I wasted $45 on a "book club analysis guide" that was just AI-generated trash

I joined a new book club last month and wanted to impress everyone with deep insights. So I bought this fancy guide for $45 that promised "expert level analysis" for our current read. Turns out it was just a bunch of generic summaries I could've Googled for free. The vocab definitions were wrong too. Spent a whole meeting quoting stuff that was factually off. Nobody said anything but I felt like a fool. Has anyone else fallen for those scam study guides online?

Honestly, gotta agree with @piper779 here. It's wild how many of these guides are just thrown together with zero care. One of the girls in my old book club bought a "character relationship map" and half the connections were based on fan theories she found on Reddit, not anything from the actual book. Tbh, @robin628, you're right that some are legit, but the bad ones are so bad they ruin trust for the whole market. Ngl, it's gotten to the point where I'd rather just read the book twice than gamble on another one of those guides.

Oh man, this happened to a friend of mine last year. She paid $30 for something called "The Ultimate Literary Companion" for a book club meetup. She was so excited to have all these deep themes and character breakdowns ready. But then she started reading the analysis out loud and another member pulled out their phone to fact check. Turns out half the quotes in the guide were completely made up, and one of the "expert insights" was just a misreading of the book's back cover summary. She still brings it up whenever anyone mentions buying anything online for book clubs. I think some people are just cranking these out with AI and slapping a price on them without even reading the source material.

Gotta push back a little though @piper779 - some of those things are actually legit and it's hit or miss. Your friend might've just grabbed a bad one.
