Our whole book club discussion fell apart over a single character

We were supposed to debate the main character's choices in 'The Midnight Library' last Tuesday. Half the group thought she was brave, the other half called her selfish. It got so heated that Sarah from Portland just logged off the Zoom call. I tried to redirect by asking about the ending, but the vibe was already broken. Has anyone else had a debate completely derail like that, and how did you get it back on track?

Ever think a book club needs a referee after reading @robin591's robot love story?

Sounds like you need what @the_elliot joked about, a real referee. My group uses a talking stick rule in the chat, only the person with the virtual stick can speak. It stops everyone from yelling at once and lets people actually finish a thought.

Our sci-fi group spent forty minutes arguing if a robot could feel love. It stopped being about the book and turned into a weird ethics fight. We just had to call it a night and pick a less emotional book next time.
