Our club read 'The Goldfinch' and 'A Little Life' back to back and it broke us

We did two 800-page books in a row, one after the other, and it was a huge mistake. 'The Goldfinch' had a plot that kept moving, but 'A Little Life' was just endless misery with no real point. After six weeks of debate, our group was totally split and three people quit. Has anyone else had a book club pick two giant downers and just kill the vibe?

Makes me wonder if we're all chasing misery to feel something these days.

Been there, done that, got the emotional hangover. My group learned to always follow a heavy book with something short and fun, like a thriller or a graphic novel. It acts as a total reset button and keeps people from burning out. Maybe try picking a theme for a lighter book to help everyone get back on the same page.

That combo sounds brutal lol. Book clubs need a vibe check before picking the lineup.
