Got told my book club picks were 'too safe' and it stung at first
So at my book club meetup last month, one of the quieter members said our selections were always 'safe and predictable' - like we never picked anything challenging. I got defensive at first, but then I looked back and yeah, we'd done 4 bestsellers in a row. I suggested we try something more divisive like My Year of Rest and Relaxation next time and half the group loved it, half hated it. But the debate was way more fun. Has anyone else had their group call them out on picking the same type of book?

Oh totally, we did the exact same thing and the snacks trick worked like magic in my group too.

My group had the same issue a few years back, so we started doing a wild card pick every third month where anyone could throw in something completely out of left field. That mix shook us up just enough without losing the people who wanted their comfortable reads.

My friend's book club tried something similar after they hit a slump. They let the person who brought the wild card also pick the snacks, so suddenly people were fighting over who got to choose the weird book. Did the snacks actually win people over in your group too?
