Lost a bid last night because my player count math was off by one

I was hosting a game night at my place in Denver last Thursday and had 7 people confirmed. I set up a 6 player game of Cosmic Encounter and figured one person would just watch or we could rotate. Turns out nobody wanted to sit out and suddenly I had 7 annoyed friends standing around my dining table. I ended up grabbing a copy of 7 Wonders from my shelf that I hadn't touched in 2 years. Everyone calmed down after we started drafting but the energy was weird for the first 20 minutes. How do you guys handle unexpected player counts when someone shows up last minute?

Does this kind of thing happen all the time in other parts of life too? I mean, it feels like all of us are constantly one person off from disaster, whether it's planning dinner, a ride to the airport, or even just picking a movie. Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed that the best laid plans always seem to hinge on that one variable you didn't account for. Your story about the 7 Wonders save is actually a pretty good example of how we're always scrambling to adjust when reality doesn't match the spreadsheet in our head. Idk, maybe the real trick isn't getting the count perfect, but having a backup game ready to go.

Dude yes, that's literally happened to me at least three times. I've got a copy of The Mind squirreled away for exactly this kind of situation now, just in case someone's count is off.
