Rant: Had to choose between a 2 pound cross peen and a 3 pound rounding hammer for a big scroll project.

I was working on a heavy gate scroll in my Tacoma shop and needed more force. I went with the heavier one, but my wrist was killing me after two hours. What's your go-to hammer weight for thick stock like 1/2 inch square?

My old teacher always said to match the hammer to the job, not the stock. He used a 2.5 lb cross peen for almost everything over 3/8 inch.

Remember my buddy who tried that and cracked his anvil in half?

Man, I'd switch to a sledge for that and just use a lighter hammer to steer.

Honestly, I used to grab the biggest hammer I could swing. Figured more weight meant less work. Then I messed up my elbow for a month. Now I stick with a 2 pounder for that stuff, even on 1/2 inch. Let the hammer do the work, not your arm. You get better control and your body doesn't hate you later. Speed and a good heat beat brute force every time.
