Heads up on using a new flux blend

I tried a different flux mix on some high-carbon steel last week and it actually seemed to etch the metal surface, leaving a weird, dull finish. I think the borax ratio was off, maybe too acidic. Has anyone else run into this with a homemade flux?

Ugh, that's a real bummer. I messed up a batch of high carbon blades last year with a flux that was way too strong, and it looked exactly like that, all cloudy and etched. It's super frustrating after putting in the work. Getting the borax mix right is such a pain sometimes. I ended up going back to my old, simpler recipe because I got tired of guessing.

Tell me about it. My last attempt at a fancy flux mix ate through a blade so bad it looked like Swiss cheese. I spent more time cleaning up the mess than I did making the thing. Sometimes the old ways are just less of a headache, even if they're not perfect. I guess we both learned the hard way to stop fixing what isn't broken.

What's your old recipe, @violaramirez?
