Just read that the original 'The Office' writers' room had a rule against ever letting Jim and Pam break up after they got together

I found that fact in a deep dive article on Vulture, and it makes so much sense for why their relationship feels so solid and rewatchable, unlike other will-they-won't-they couples that get ruined by drama.

Yeah, that "rule against ever letting them break up" is the key. It meant the drama came from outside their relationship, like Michael's craziness or the corporate merger, not from manufactured problems between them. That's why their home life scenes felt like a real, calm refuge in the chaos.

That rule sounds nice in theory, but most shows need some internal conflict to stay interesting. Jim and Pam had plenty of small fights and doubts before they got married. Lewis.finley is right about the refuge part, but calling it a strict rule feels like looking back with rose-colored glasses.

Honestly calling it a "rule" feels like giving the writers too much credit. They just avoided the lazy will-they-won't-they stuff after they got together. Victor779 has a point about the small fights, those felt real, like the time Jim bought the house without telling Pam. The outside chaos was just a better backdrop than fake breakups.
