Warning: that "saving money" hack of buying generic dishwasher tabs cost me $350 in plumbing repairs
I tried the cheap store brand pods to save like $4 a month, and after 3 months the gunk built up so bad it clogged the spray arm. Has anyone else had this happen or did I just pick the worst brand?

The thing is, this isn't just about dish pods, its part of that whole "cheaper now, pay later" trap people fall into with almost everything. You see it with cheap printer ink that gums up the print heads, or bargain motor oil that leaves sludge, or even those discount phone chargers that fry your battery. People get so focused on saving a buck today they forget the cheap stuff often cuts corners on the stuff that keeps things running smooth long term. I would bet the cheap pods use a different binding agent or less of the anti-scaling stuff, so it just slowly builds up. Its like buying a $10 frying pan that warps after a month versus spending $40 on one that lasts years. Sometimes the real savings is just paying a fair price for something that works right from the start.

Hold on @joel_jones, I get the point but I've used cheap pods for years and never had a problem with my dishwasher. Maybe people just buy the absolute worst off-brand stuff from a dollar store. Sometimes "paying less" just means you're paying for the name on the box, not actual quality.
