Honestly, I think you're mixing up "writing things down" with "trying to memorize things." When you write stuff down, you're offloading it from your brain to paper, which actually frees up mental space. The problem is when people try to force every memory into their head without any system - that's what makes you forget more, not the act of writing.

Not everything has to be some deep psychological strategy though. People write stuff down for all kinds of reasons, sometimes its just to remember a grocery list or a phone number. Nancyn69 is acting like theres a right and wrong way to use paper or something. I write stuff down all the time and forget it anyway, so maybe the system is just a crutch for people who overthink things. At the end of the day its just notes, not a memory hack. The whole "offloading brain power" thing sounds a bit too much like a self help book. Just write it down if it helps, dont worry about the philosophy behind it.
