I thought finding my grandpa's old fishing spot would be easy

He told me it was 'by the big rock shaped like a bear' on Lake Superior, but that took me three summers of looking. I'd go up for a week each August, walking miles of shoreline. I finally found it last month, a full eight years after he first mentioned it. The rock was smaller than I pictured, half hidden by pines. Has anyone else spent way longer than planned tracking down a family place?

by the big rock" is always way harder than it sounds.

People make it sound like a landmark mission. "Meet me by the big rock" and you're looking for a boulder, but it's just a lump in the grass. My friend gave those directions once and his "big rock" was a painted curb. It gets built up in people's heads way more than it should.

My crew's "big rock" was a concrete patch we'd been staring at for weeks.

Grandpa's "big rock" was probably a pebble he tripped over once.
